We?ve heard Apple?s bold statements before but none caught our attention like their views on the new iPad 3, we say ?3? thanks to this iPad being the third generation, and it?s Apple?s view that their latest tablet can take on the PS Vita, Xbox 360, and PS3.
During the new iPad keynote Apple had hinted towards their latest iPad taking on the consoles, and in so many words they explained the quad-core graphics and Retina display could take on current home consoles, and might even pose a threat to handhelds like the PS Vita.
Some news for you Apple, it?s not going to happen ? this is coming from an owner of the PS Vita and also someone that has their new iPad coming on March 16, but even though we love Apple products it seems a little deluded to think hardcore or even casual console gamers would jump ship completely. There is room in my life for the PS Vita, new iPad and also our Xbox 360 and PS3, so for us it?s obvious they can all coexist.
Thanks to reviewing a number of games it?s my job to have most of the gaming devices available today, which allows us to give a hands-on experience and to understand the systems by really knowing them. We wouldn?t expect gamers to own all the systems we do, although we know a few that do, but for Apple to remotely think an iPad can do the job of the Xbox 360 and PS3 ? no matter how old they are getting now ? is crazy in our opinion.
We?ve seen a number of people spend time playing iPad and Android apps, but these people mostly head back to the home console for the big screen and enhanced gameplay, unless they never owned a home console or had time for them. Yes, we know the iPad can stream games to your big HDTV and have tried this ourselves on a number of occasions, but it?s far from perfect and touch controls are nothing like that of the Xbox 360 and PS3.
This is where handheld devices need dedicated controls like seen on the new PS Vita, which brings both the graphics and controls to appeal to many hardcore and casual gamers.
Apple will never kill off console gaming although we do expect they?ll find their place with the new iPad, which is surely going to create buzz but the dedicated home console is still needed and wanted for gamers after they get bored of gaming on a tablet.
It?s a great time for gamers ? having been gaming for over 30 years I?d have to say that it has never been so good for gamers, and while I have many great memories of playing games on the C64, the choice we have right now in terms of hardware, graphics and gameplay is absolutely brilliant.
