Best Apps for Windows Phone, June 2012

Check out the latest and greatest in apps for your Windows Phone with our monthly app roundup.

Thumba Photo Editor

More effects than you can shake a hipster at.

It?s an old saying that the best camera is the one that?s with you. This rule is proven by the layers of dust that have accumulated on point-and-shoots since the popularisation of the smartphone ? even despite their superior optics. However, I don?t think smartphones won the camera war just because they?re handy; it?s also because you can immediately shoot, edit and post.

Thumba?s biggest strength is the inclusion of over 70 adjustments, effects and filters, each of which can be combined with any other and applied to the full-resolution image.

Adjustments include resize, crop, rotate, flip, mirror, auto contrast, normalise, brightness and contrast, hue and saturation, sharpness, exposure, white balance, shadows and highlights, colour balance, colourise, grayscale, multiply, noise removal and posterise.

More advanced functions and filters include borders, red-eye removal, pinch and bloat, HDR, soften portrait, skin treatment, 3D glasses, Velvia, Lomo, cross processing, vignette, black and white, retro, vintage, old photo, tilt-shift, lens flare, pencil sketch, zoom blur and many, many others.

With all of these effects, quick comparison with the original image, editing and creation of GPS location and the ability to share out the finished photo to Facebook, Flickr and Twitter, Thumba provides ample reason to never consider a point-and-shoot again.

Tango Video Calls

One great advantage of third-party video calling apps is that they open the way for cross-platform video calls. Tango allows you to conduct free (well, almost: they?ll eat into your data allowance) video and voice calls between Windows Phone 7, Android, iOS handsets and tablets, as well as PCs.
The biggest advantage is, of course, international dialling. The app also goes through your phonebook to find contacts that have a Tango account, making connecting with them a breeze.

Taptitude

If you?re of a ?bulk buy? persuasion, perhaps even if you?re not, Taptitude will deliver. This app comes with not one, not five, not 10, not even 25, but more than 50 games! It?s like one of those game cartridges that came bundled with your Atari 2600? only the games don?t suck.
If you?re dedicated/unemployed/a demon at time-management, you can try and collect all 280 stars across all the games, or else you can just compete online in the real-time, weekly, and global leaderboards.

Seesmic Ping

The Seesmic app combined your different social networks into a single timeline, but ? upsetting for uber power users ? limited the number of accounts/pages/profiles that you could register.
The post-only Seesmic Ping does away with these restrictions, enabling you to post to as many profiles/networks as you desire. It also allows you to schedule posts, which can be handy for a number of reasons, including pretending to your friends that you really are having a wild Saturday night, and not organising your video game collection by Metacritic rating.
