MORELIA, Mexico ? The Mexican political party of President Felipe Calderon says his sister has won a primary election to become its gubernatorial candidate in the president's home state of Michoacan.
Committee chairman Gustavo Madero of the National Action Party says former Sen. Luisa Maria Calderon will represent the party in Michoacan's state elections Nov. 13.
She won around 60 percent of the votes in the party's primary against another senator.
Michoacan is where President Calderon launched his offensive against drug cartels after taking office in December 2006.
The state is the home base of La Familia drug cartel. The government claims its offensive has dismantled the cartel, but drug violence continues as a splinter group fights enemy gangs.
