Beijing 2008 road racing gold medallist Samuel Sanchez will miss London 2012 after failing to recover from injuries picked up at the Tour de France. Sanchez would have been a major rival to the likes of Mark Cavendish and Bradley Wiggins Sanchez crashed on stage eight, breaking a finger in his right hand and suffering bruising to the shoulder and upper back, and despite his best efforts to recover in time for the Games which start on Friday July 27, he says he feels uncomfortable on a bike and has had to pull out. ?Even though physically he felt good, he continued to suffer from pain, in both his hand and shoulder,? said Spanish national cycling manager Jose Luis De Santos. ?Concerning his hand, he had a lot of problems holding onto the handlebars as well as changing gears. That would have made it too dangerous in race conditions. For that [reason], we decided he would not go to London.? The men?s road race on Saturday July 28 is the first medal event of the Games, with home hopes being carried by newly-crowned Tour de France champion Bradley Wiggins and world champion Mark Cavendish. Spain?s road racing team have had a terrible build-up to the London Games, with three-time world champion Oscar Freire also ruled out because of injury, and the other three members ? Luis Leon Sanchez, Alejandro Valverde and Jose Joaquin Rojas ? also sustained injuries during the Tour. Rojas is expected to be fit in time to race, however, while Fran Ventoso has replaced Freire and Jonathan Castroviejo is expected to deputise for Sanchez.
