How often have we heard Vince McMahon claim that UFC isn?t competition?

A couple of years back while speaking to the Hollywood Reporter he said: ?Most people thought at one point that we would be competitors. But it turns out they are not competition to us at all, or hardly at all. They are sport, we are entertainment; it?s a huge difference. The revenue they have cut into is that of boxing.?

Vince, mate. Bullshit. Utter fucking bullshit.

The truth is, pro-wrestling fans are turning to MMA in droves, PPV buy-rates are down and WWE (and, by constantly copying them, TNA) are heading the wrong damn way on a slippery slope.

What MMA offers viewers that WWE isn?t providing at the minute is the sense of unpredictability. You tune into an Extreme Rules or an Over The Limit then odds are you are buying the event in spite of what the results are going to be ? not to find out what they are.

Fifty dollars is a lot of money when you know Cena is going to win in the main event. A couple of years ago even that was acceptable, but the quality of his matches ? which was never that high compared to most workers ? has dropped rapidly as he has moved into the veteran role, leading less experienced workers ? a position he is ill-equipped for.

Compare and contrast that to a UFC event where pretty much anything can happen.

Such is the beauty of sport.

And it is sport that McMahon has shyed away from for so so long. The mid-eightes expansion saw the coining of the phrase ?sports-entertainment? and in recent months even that has been dropped. WWE is just pure entertainment now.

Which would be great if it was capable of being consistently entertaining. Like, you know, sports are.

WWE would argue that by heavily scripting and laying out matches they gain more control of the ebb and flow of each presentation, something which would not be possible in competitive sport.

But is there anything more exciting to watch than a gladitorial sporting contest?

Take for example, the last 16 match between Andy Murray and Victor Troicki at the French Open earlier this week. How could that possibly have been any better if it was scripted?

You had Murray, the world number 4 go into the match carrying an injury and, for days leading up to the match the question of whether he would even make it was on everyones minds.

Then you had his opponent, Troicki, who had never beaten Murray before but was a guy who was on the best run of his career and had climbed to number 15 in the world.

Straight away, that real-life situation had a ton more potential and a much better story than ?John Cena has never said I Quit but Alex Riley can take part in the match alongside The Miz to make it two-on-one.?

Now obviously I?m not advocating that they throw the scripts out the window and let WWE Superstars legitimately fight it out. That would be horrible.

But was it any coincidence that at Over The Limit the crowd was noticably louder for the enthralling back-and-forth encounter of Randy Orton and Christian, than it was for the tepid, glorified angle that was John Cena vs The Miz?

WWE presentations would improve ten-fold if the matches were afforded the added realism that would come from being presented as real?competitive?sporting contests rather than the overly considered and planned efforts we see now.

The most bizarre, most deluded thing about all of this is that I would imagine the majority of WWE fans are sports fans too.

Seriously, I would love to know how big a section of the WWE audience doesn?t watch any competitive sport.

I am sure that worldwide there is more cross-over between WWE and all kinds of different sports than there is between wrestling and the day-time soap operas that WWE creative keeps hiring from.

'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' Trailer And Others Made More Awesome With Music

After winning an Oscar and Golden Globe for their first foray into film scoring ? David Fincher's "The Social Network" ? it's safe to say that Trent Reznor and his digital partner, Atticus Ross, have found a new calling. It's a no-brainer that Fincher called upon their services once again to score his upcoming film adaptation of the Swedish crime/mystery series, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo." While the first film of the trilogy is not due until December 21, a bootleg of the trailer has leaked and contains quite the surprising audio accompaniment.

Pounding over the stark images of Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara as Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander is a synth-heavy cover of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" with none other than the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' frontwoman Karen O giving her best "ah-ha" wail to kick off the song. The guitar mastery of Jimmy Page and drum pillaging of John Bonham have been replaced with an eerie, marching electronic beat that has us longing for new Nine Inch Nails material. The dirty, distorted vocals are perfectly matched with the bleak scenes of the trailer, and will undoubtedly make your skin scrawl. The short clip (1:39 min) is already boasting 1.4 million hits on YouTube, and it's hard to say what fans are more excited about ? the music or the film?

Reznor has already taken to his Twitter account and posted that he is "blown away" by the positive response he's received from fans. Of course, the purpose of a trailer is to make you want to see a film, but the musical element can increase said desire by adding a certain emotional depth. Here are some trailers that hold well on their own, but become exponentially more awesome by being paired with songs that fit quite aptly.

M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" in the "Pineapple Express" trailer:
The line "sticks and stones and weed and bombs" may be the sole reason that "Paper Planes" is even used in the trailer for the smoke-tastic "Pineapple Express," but it's a good thing they chose it. The song has a laid-back vibe but features violent lyrics and sampling of gunshots, which matches the "Is it an action or comedy?" vibe of the film itself.

Coheed & Cambria's "Welcome Home" in the "9" trailer:
Not to be confused with the musical "Nine," 2009's "9" is a Tim Burton-produced animated film that takes place in a steam-punk dystopia. I can imagine execs were unsure how to market the film, as it is geared towards an older audience than your typical animated fare. Leave it to Coheed & Cambria's "Welcome Home" to give the film a more badass, "I must see this now!" urgency that would likely be absent if paired up with a Randy Newman song.

The Smashing Pumpkins' "The End is the Beginning is the End" in the "Watchmen trailer:
Occasionally, songs are even more successful when taken out of their original context. Such is the case for the Smashing Pumpkins "The End Is the Beginning Is the End," which was recorded specifically for 1997's "Batman & Robin," but more appropriately used in the trailer for 2009's "Watchmen." The strings on the tune give it a slow, epic vibe that perfectly captures the spirit of the iconic graphic novel. See: Dr. Manhattan making someone spontaneously combust in sync with the drum beat.

Arcade Fire's "Wake Up" in the "Where the Wild Things Are" trailer:
Wow, talk about a song and film that just go together. Spike Jonze commissioned the Arcade Fire to re-record their melancholic tune "Wake Up" for his 2009 film adaptation of the popular children's book. I haven't bothered to look at the actual numbers, but I'm willing to bet that 75 percent of viewers got goose bumps the first time they saw this trailer.

Android malware racks up phone and SMS fees

If you or members of your company's mobile workforce have been racking up unusually high SMS and phone charges on their Android smartphones, a newly discovered malware called BaseBridge could be the culprit.

Mobile security company NetQin warns that the malware has been found thus far in more than 20 Android applications -- with titles such as Voice SMS, Trader, and Donkey Jump -- that are circulating on various Internet forums. The malware is capable of surreptitiously auto-dialing phone numbers and sending SMSes, thus racking up fees for users.

According to NetQin, this auto-dialing malware is the first of its kind spotted in the wild on Android devices, though similar software has previously been spotted on Symbian devices. BaseBridge should serve to nudge companies that have been dragging their feet in developing security policies for mobile devices and educating end-users on using their devices securely.

When will users learn?
As is often the case when it comes to IT security breaches, end-users are the weak links here. First, a user has to blithely download one of the infected apps from some forum, which is about as sensible as eating a cupcake handed to you by a masked stranger in a dark alley. Next, the end-user has to consent to the malware's prompt to upgrade. This enables the malware to be installed under the software named com.android.battery. From there, the user receives another prompt, this time to restart the app. Doing so formally activates that malware.

Activation launches three malicious services -- AdSmsService, BridgeProvider, and PhoneService -- that communicate with a control server. The server sends the infected device a configuration list containing numbers to dial and SMS messages to send, incurring fees for the user.

BaseBridge is capable of hiding its activities by blocking fee-consumption messages sent to the device from the user's mobile carrier. Moreover, if the malware is installed on a device running the 360 Safeguard mobile security software, it generates a false message stating that the software has been terminated due to an error when, in fact, it's running properly.
