IT'S ABOUT THE MOMENT

After watching the boss try out the podium and the teleprompters, senior aide Eric Fehrnstrom was in no mood to lower expectations. He predicted a great performance from Mitt Romney as he formally accepts the presidential nomination Thursday night.

"These speeches are just as much about the moment as they are about the words," Fehrnstrom said. "One thing we know about Mitt Romney is that he always rises to the occasion.

"This is the biggest speech of his political career. And I have no doubt that he will deliver the best speech of his political career."

Tiny mites on your face may cause rosacea

Scientists may have finally found what sparks the inflamed and reddened skin in people suffering from rosacea: tiny mites that crawl across most of our faces, unseen and unfelt. The new finding may eventually lead to more effective treatments, researchers say.

Sport Psychology: The Zen of a Business Like Approach | Rachel Long

How do the pros stay so cool under pressure? What are their secrets to approaching intense competition and practice week after week, year after year? No doubt recreational players have much to learn from professional athletes, but many of these take home lessons are more subtle and have to do with how pros psychologically address competition. With a doctorate in sports science and a career of tennis coaching all levels of athletes, the author has some unique credentials to help answer these questions.

It is easy to see that recreational players of individual sports are usually passionate, independent people. Sometimes too passionate! Those who approach an individual sport like tennis, table tennis, or racquetball often react too ?black/white? to the outcome of discrete points. They show too much elation and too much disappointment before the end of competition. Getting pumped up after a good shot or key situation is fine, but this is often used excessively in recreational play.

The only point that is critical in individual sports is the last point. Until then, other points should be approached as part of the process of ?negotiating? the contest. Finding the thousands of grey shades between the ?black and white?, the good and bad perspective on performance, is actually practice in the Zen of competition and the ?Business Like? approach of the pros.

In poker, when a player displays body language or posture that says, ?I no longer think I can win?, it is called a ?Tell?. At a poker table tells convert to money. In individual sports, tells help adjust an observant players strategy from point to point, perhaps the rest of the match. A professional poker player is a great example of the proper approach to one on one competition. Let?s look at how thought patterns commonly progress during a match.

First, realize that almost every player walks onto the court thinking they will win that day. Generally, players have similar physical abilities, but on that day, one will convince the other they will not likely win at some point in the contest. Keep in mind, sports psychologists say ?that day only? because statistics show that it is rare for one player to dominate the other in wins and losses over their careers.

If you don?t currently make a living playing sports, you are a recreational player and you have the ?luxury? of thinking you have no chance against a particular person. A pro can?t afford to think that way because most are playing for meals and expenses. Some professional athletes may NOT start out treating competition like a business, but they quickly learn or get counseled, to make that adjustment.

A ?business like? approach also includes respecting the ability of all opponents in several ways. First, your opponent?s excellence, or just effort, is responsible for your improvement. The better they play, the better you must to win. It is a fact of human psychology that losses are more motivating to your practice effort, thus improvement, than wins.

Second, it is critical in a ?business like? approach to resist the temptation to find excuses for your loss. Remember that nearly everyone come to competition physically ?dinged up? in some form. Rarely do players feel perfect. Therefor, accepting defeat from another imperfect but worthy opponent, without hiding behind excuses, shows strength of character. That is the Zen of acceptance of competitions very nature. This takes mental practice to catch yourself going off track.

Again, if you lose, even just a point, PRACTICE giving your opponent credit at all times for playing a role in that. Often tennis students ask, ?but my double fault isn?t THEIR responsibility is it?? The answer is actually that it is. Their existence puts competitive pressure on your serve. In football, they now count what is called ?Pressures?. It is the perception that the quarterback felt an approaching tackler that caused him to misfire. It is the same in individual sports.

The ultimate respect for one?s opponent is a central tenant of martial arts as exemplified by the training of Shaolin Temple monks. For thousands of years great ritual and honor is given to the opponent, who represents our internal struggle. That is the Zen of battle.

The pros also know that giving your opponent credit takes pressure off your own performance. Self deprecation, angry displays at one?s own performance, essentially makes the competition two players against none! The business approach is to make your opponent play great to win as often as possible. If they can do that, they deserve to win.

It is also ?business like? to mentally PRACTICE treating your opponent as just another witness who is watching to see how the drama will play out in this match only. In other words, a ?short memory? allows you to leave past results where they belong so they don?t influence future events. Can you do this for the next point and the next?

Between points is the time to plan strategy, assess how your opponent is playing/feeling, what tendencies are unfolding, and how you will construct the next point BUT, it takes practice to avoid generalizing about how you are going to play that day or how often your opponent has beaten you. The Zen of this is to merely observe these negative thoughts and let them pass. With practice they will lessen just as distracting thoughts lessen as meditation becomes more skilled.

The truth is that human performance between two closely matched talents in a complex sport actually ?splatters? like a modern artist throwing paint toward a canvas. It is different every day like a kaleidoscope, with only tendencies to predictability. This perspective will help you become less judgmental about your own performance, a better competitor, and more appreciative of your good fortune to have such recreation. Gratitude for the amazing chance to ?play? is also Zen.

Samsung announces Series 5 and Series 7 Windows 8 tablets with S Pen apps, optional keyboards

Samsung announces Series 5 and Series 7 Windows 8 tablets with S Pen apps, optional keyboards

Samsung already showed off its Series 5 Hybrid back at Computex, but what we didn't know was that Sammy had yet another tablet / laptop mash-up in the works. The company just formally announced the Series 5 and it turns out it's going to be joined by the next-gen Series 7 Slate as well. (Also known as the ATIV tabs in regions outside the US.) The two 11-inch tablets more or less look alike, except the Series 5 is powered by an Atom-based Clover Trail processor, while the Series 7 packs Core i5 guts. Both support pen input, and will come with the same S Pen apps found on the Galaxy Note 10.1. As for that optional keyboard dock, Samsung previously touted its magnetic hinge, but the dock has since been retooled with a sturdier latch-based mechanism. (Check out the video below to see it in action -- the tablet really does seem incapable of falling out.)

As you can imagine, that difference in processor entails more than just different clock speeds. The two-watt Atom chip inside the Series 5 is rated for about nine hours of battery life, whereas the Core i5-powered Series 7 is expected to last between four and five hours on a charge. (The Series 5 is lighter, too, at 1.65 pounds, compared with 1.89 for the Series 7.) And, being a lower-powered device, the Series 5 has no vents. Last major difference: the Series 7 has a 1080p screen, while the Series 5's resolution tops out at 1,366 x 768.

On the software side, Samsung is loading all of its Win 8 systems with its various Media Hubs -- yes, just like the ones you'll find on the company's Android devices. You'll also find AllShare, a DLNA media-sharing app; S-Launcher, a widget that replicates the missing Start Menu in Windows 8; and eSettings, a centralized options menu for folks who maybe haven't learned where all the settings are in Win 8. As for those S Pen applications, you've got S Note, among other carry-overs from the Android side. As with the Note 10.1, the pen itself can recognize 1,024 degrees of pressure sensitivity.

Both tablets will arrive October 26th, the day Windows 8 starts shipping. The Series 7 will be available in one $1,119 configuration with 4GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD and the keyboard. The Series 5, meanwhile, will cost $649, and will include 2GB of RAM and a 64GB solid-state drive. If you like, you can purchase the keyboard for $100, or you can buy the two as a bundle for $749. We'll be back with reviews in October but until then, check out our walk-through below. (Note: we didn't get a chance to play with AllShare, the S Pen apps or the Hubs, but hopefully we can give you a more detailed demo of the software soon.)

Convention one-liners driving most discussion of issues on Twitter

The tremendous volume of tweets around the Republican convention do not generally dwell on questions of policy. As countless commentators have pointed out, the conventions are more about personalities and imagery than they are about platform and ideas.

The one major exception we see on Twitter is when a particular line from a speech stands out. The following graph shows mentions of three of the most-discussed political issues: abortion, unions and education.

Tops Issues

The explanation is simple. Most abortion comments referred to Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell in connection to Virginia's controversial bill requiring women seeking abortions to have an ultrasound.

The spike in union references comes directly from New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's zinger:?"They believe in teacher's unions, we believe in teachers." And the education spike is thanks to Condoleezza Rice's line that education is "the civil rights struggle of our day."

UPDATE, 9:56 p.m.: Jeb Bush's education-heavy address drove similar volumes of discussion about education, though there's no one line responsible:

We're working on an official?corollary to the Signal's theory of one-liners.

Getting Assistance From A Social Media Agency: Businesses Create ...

As major movers in the marketing and advertising scene may believe that more actual or ?organic? strategies of promoting products and services like giving away pamphlets, setting up billboards, and also hosting special occasions still attract consumers and prospects, there is no doubt that the internet is a vital venue for getting the word out regarding a company that need to be seriously invested in. There?s barely a person to be found who has not own just one cellphone or create an account for a social network site the first time nowadays; for the normal grownup, logging onto the Internet via a cellphone, laptop computer, or even tablet computer is normally a daily activity (typically repeated more than once a day), making the internet an excellent place for enterprises to get to existing customers and interact with potential new ones.

Where exactly, will these target people be found? The answer would undeniably be in social networking sites. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, FourSquare, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Flickr, and WordPress blogging sites are some of the sites that millions of users check into everyday, and it is only reasonable for businesses of all sizes and throughout different sectors to reach out to their intended audiences in those sites. The same as with some other marketing efforts, businesses may find themselves requiring experienced support in managing several accounts all at once, if that?s the case, companies can get the help of an exceptional social media agency. World businesses can be assured of a good presence around various social network accounts thanks to specialists navigating the web and taking advantage of it for its capability.

To be able to focus on one?s major business functions is among the advantages companies can enjoy after getting a provider specializing in social media marketing. World specialists can certainly target a business?s ideal consumers and create deep and important connections with them through the social networking accounts. With thousands (or perhaps millions) of Online users logged onto a particular site at any given time, there are several good possibilities to make use of viral and word-of-mouth marketing and advertising through the consumers -that?s for sure free positive marketing free of charge to the business owner. Social media sites enable companies to have real-time comments on their performance and their products.

Because any frequent Internet user would know, most of the sites encourage customers to leave remarks, share information, and express their views as much as possible; there?s no better or simpler way for companies to view both negative and positive messages from their customers and adjust their services accordingly to meet the needs and desires of their target audience.

Thanks to an experienced social media agency, companies can establish a good social media presence and keep their customers up-to-date with new improvements and exclusive promotions, keeping them tempted to stay connected and keep an online connection. With better customer relations, there?s no other result to be had other than more generated business and also strengthened customer commitment.

A lot of businesses today are growing and with that they are now lured to hire a social media agency. London companies are already seeing the advantage for using it.

CONVENTION WATCH: Donald Trump, president's pen

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Around the 2012 Republican National Convention and its host city with journalists from The Associated Press bringing the flavor and details to you:

___

TRUMP'S TEASE

For weeks, showman Donald Trump has been doing the slow tease about his plans for the GOP convention.

He was asked to speak, he says, but decided to do something "bigger." Something "very, very major." Something "hopefully quite amazing."

Trump was in Sarasota, Fla., over the weekend to accept an award, but headed back to New York when Monday's convention activities were pared down due to Tropical Storm Isaac.

Does that mean no more surprise?

"The big surprise is still going to happen, so stay tuned," promises Trump spokesman Michael Cohen.

GOP officials are playing along. Says convention planner Russ Schriefer: "Just because he isn't here, doesn't mean he's not going to show up."

THE PRESIDENT'S PEN

His rivals may be convening in Florida this week. But at the White House, President Barack Obama is getting ready for his big moment next week ? at the Democratic National Convention.

Aides say Obama spent part of Monday working on the speech he'll deliver at his party's gathering in Charlotte, N.C. A working draft, they say, has already been developed.

DOG FIGHT

At least one Tampa, Fla., rally's gone to the dogs already.

Amid a protest objecting to the way Mitt Romney transported the family pet on a years-ago vacation ? inside an animal carrier strapped atop the car ? a woman stepped into the crowd and began loudly defending the GOP candidate.

"What Mitt Romney did to his dog, his dog liked and it was safe and enjoyable," said Barbara Seidenberg. As several canine-toting protesters tried to shout her down, she pressed on.

"Barack Obama was a 10-year-old boy when he ate dog," she said, apparently referring to a passage in one of Obama's books in which he writes about eating dog meat as a boy in Indonesia. "But he was a grown man when he decided his whole persona and his life was going to be committed to turning this country into less of a country so that ? "

She was drowned out by a protester yelling "Obama 2012!"

A shouting match ensued, and Seidenberg stormed off.

CAIN WEIGHS IN

At one point, he was a serious challenger for the GOP nomination. But Herman Cain says he's not upset about being excluded from the list of speakers at the Republican National Convention this week.

Cain's 9-9-9 tax plan helped him carve out a unique niche in the primary, with some polls showing him moving toward taking the lead in the fall. But allegations of sexual harassment derailed his candidacy.

Cain is making the rounds in Tampa. He tells CNN that he has met one-on-one with presumptive nominee Mitt Romney on at least three occasions in recent months. He says he's not upset about his lack of a speaking slot because other black Republican speakers needed the exposure more than he did.

Cain says the allegations that derailed his candidacy were part of a coordinated attack, but he didn't say whether the effort was undertaken by a particular Republican or a Democratic campaign: "I don't want to say anything that might jeopardize what we might do in the future in terms of exposing what happened."

___

ISAAC'S UGLY, BUT NO KATRINA

Isaac is sweeping up the Gulf Coast just in time for the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans.

A tropical storm expected to strengthen into a hurricane, Isaac could prove punishing. But it's nowhere near as powerful as the bruiser that struck on Aug. 29, 2005.

At one point, Katrina reached Category 5 status with winds over 157 mph. It made landfall as a Category 3 with a huge storm surge. Levee failures caused catastrophic flooding.

This time, Federal Emergency Management Agency officials say the updated levees around New Orleans are equipped to handle storms stronger than Isaac. City officials had no plans to order evacuations, instead telling residents to hunker down and make do with the supplies they have.

"It's going to be all right," said New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu.

Isaac promises a soaking but not much more for Tampa, Fla., where the Republican National Convention was pushed back a day just in case.

SAY IT IN SONG

Why say it when you can sing it?

Most speeches at this week's Republican National Convention are set to a particular theme for the day. "We Built It," is Tuesday's mantra, a poke at Obama's "You didn't build that" line at a July campaign event.

A convention entertainer will sing about it. Guitarist Lane Turner rehearsed his tune "I Built It" in a sparsely filled convention hall Monday.

"I built it with my own two working hands," goes the chorus. "Yeah I built it. No help from Uncle Sam."

Obama's campaign argues that his words, meant to stress the value of government in fostering infrastructure, were taken out of context.

___

VOIGHT ON OBAMA

The Virginia delegation served up some celebrity with its political breakfast Monday.

Jon Voight, the Academy Award-winning actor better known to today's moviegoers as the father of Angelina Jolie, joined Tagg Romney, son of the presidential candidate, to talk government spending, media coverage and President Barack Obama's record at the delegation's morning session.

Delegate Erin Smith of Leesburg, Va., says Voight complained that the media wasn't providing balanced coverage of the two candidates. She says Voight also argued that on several issues Obama campaigned on, he acted differently in office.

? Donna Cassata ? http://twitter.com/donnacassataAP

___

TEMPEST IN A TOTE BAG?

Maybe Mitt Romney assumes GOP delegates won't read all the way to page 177 of his book, "No Apology," included in their gift bags.

If they do, they'll find an uncomfortable sentence for Romney ? a sentence dropped from the paperback edition. It alludes to his push, as Massachusetts governor, to require all residents to obtain insurance as part of health care reforms.

"We can accomplish the same thing for everyone in the country, and it can be done without letting government take over health care," Romney wrote. That sounds a lot like the health care mandate in "Obamacare," which Romney now vows to undo.

In the paperback edition, the passage refers only to preventing a government takeover of health care. Publications including the Washington Examiner took note of the hardback's presence at the convention.

Of course, hardbacks make nicer gifts. And the swag bags don't include much else ? mints and sunglasses, mainly.

? Charles Babington ? Twitter http://twitter.com/cbabington

___

A CAREFUL TONE

"You can tone down the happy-days-are-here-again a bit. Maybe you don't have the biggest balloon drop in history." ? Rich Galen, veteran Republican consultant in Washington, discussing how to strike an appropriate tone at a convention that unfolds against the backdrop of a major storm.

? Thomas Beaumont ? Twitter http://twitter.com/tombeaumont

___

5 GUYS, 5 WORDS

The five Romney sons got one word each to describe Dad during a Fox News Channel interview. What they came up with:

Craig: "Qualified."

Ben: "Frugal."

Josh: "Cheap."

Matt: "Integrity."

Tagg: "Generous."

? Nancy Benac ? Twitter http://twitter.com/nbenac

___

HURRICANE GOP?

Dorothy Crockett says she wasn't about to let Isaac, the tropical storm gaining hurricane strength, keep her from a minute of the Republican National Convention.

The Arkansas spitfire ? decked out in red, white and blue from her jacket to her earrings ? was among a couple hundred delegates who showed up for the abbreviated opening Monday despite the cancellation of the speaking schedule.

"At my age I have never experienced a hurricane," the 77-year-old from northeast Arkansas says. "The only hurricane I want to experience is the Republicans taking over the House, the Senate and the White House. This is the Republican hurricane."

? Brian Bakst ? Twitter http://twitter.com/Stowydad

___

CHOICE SEATING

Mitt Romney's adopted state of Massachusetts is rewarded at the Republican National Convention with prime seating ? just feet from where he'll accept the nomination this week. It's a rare honor for Massachusetts, a Democratic bastion used to being relegated to the back of the hall.

Kerry Healy, who served as lieutenant governor under Romney, is at the front of the front next to others who helped his rise. It reflects, Healy says, "a new thing for Massachusetts to have a Republican nominee for president. We have had plenty of the other kind."

Also in choice seats: delegates from battleground states of Virginia and Ohio as well as Romney's birth state of Michigan and vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan's home state of Wisconsin.

Brown Shoe narrows 2Q loss on lower costs

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? Brown Shoe Company Inc., which owns the Famous Footwear and Naturalizer shoe store chains, said Tuesday that its second-quarter loss shrank as it cut costs. But revenue fell slightly below expectations and the company said it remains cautious about the weak economy, sending shares tumbling.

High unemployment and uncertainty about the recovery have weighed on U.S. consumer spending in spring and early summer. Brown Shoe said

For the quarter ended July 28, the St. Louis-based company posted a loss of $2.5 million, or 6 cents per share, compared with a loss of $4.6 million, or 11 cents per share, in the same quarter last year. Excluding costs for exiting some of its brands and closing facilities, the company said it posted an adjusted profit of 16 cents per share. Analysts, on average, had expected a profit of just 3 cents per share, according to a FactSet poll.

Revenue fell 3 percent to $599.3 million from $620.6 million due to exiting some brands, an expected drop in Dr. Scholl's sales as the brand completes a turnaround effort and slightly light Naturalizer sales. That fell slightly short of the $607.2 million expected by analysts. The drop was offset in part by a 6 percent drop in selling and administrative expenses to $219.3 million. Gross profit margin or profitability improved to 39 percent from 37.6 percent in 2011.

Sales at the company's Famous Footwear chain rose nearly 2 percent to $350.3 million on higher demand for sandals and running shoes. A key retail metric that excludes newly opened of closed stores rose about 4 percent. Sales in the company's wholesale division fell 9 percent to $195 million. Brown Shoe expects sales in that unit to drop this year as it shuts down parts of the business.

Looking forward, the company lifted the bottom end of its 2012 profit forecast to 85 cents from 83 cents previously, but maintained the top end of the range at 95 cents per share. Analysts expect 88 cents per share, on average. Brown Shoe also backed its previous revenue prediction of $2.57 billion to $2.59 billion. Analysts expect $2.57 billion.

The stock initially jumped to a new 52-week high of $16.04 on the report but then fell as low as $13.91. In heavy afternoon trading, Brown Shoe shares were down $1.29, or 8.4 percent, to $14.11.

M&T buying Hudson City Bancorp in $3.7B deal

NEW YORK (AP) ? M&T Bank Corp. is buying Hudson City Bancorp Inc. in a cash-and-stock deal valued at about $3.7 billion that will broaden its reach in the eastern U.S. Hudson City's stock climbed nearly 16 percent Monday.

The buyout includes Hudson City's 135 branch offices located in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

The combined company will include 870 branches located in states running from Connecticut to Virginia. M&T says there is very little overlap between its existing branches and those of Hudson City.

Both companies' boards have approved the transaction, but it needs approval from both companies' shareholders. The deal is expected to add to earnings per share.

M&T, based in Buffalo, N.Y., has $80.8 billion in assets. Hudson City, based in Paramus, N.J., has $43.6 billion in assets.

Each Hudson City share will receive consideration valued at 0.08403 of an M&T share in the form of either M&T stock or cash.

Hudson City's stock rose $1.01, or 15.7 percent, to close at $7.45 Monday. Shares of M&T rose $3.95, or 4.6 percent, to $89.82.

M&T said it expects to receive about $25 billion in deposits and $28 billion in loans from the buyout, prior to acquisition-related accounting adjustments. M&T says this will give it the fourth biggest deposit share in New Jersey.

M&T said that after the deal closes it plans to pay back about $13 billion of Hudson City's long-term borrowings by liquidating its investment portfolio.

Inside the Most Radical Experiment in Racing

In the 80 years of racing at Le Mans, the track stewards had never seen anything like it. As the sleek black auto eased its way onto the grid, they could not help but marvel at the long thin nose and the bulging, Batmobile-like tail. Even among the various classes of cars?the winged prototypes, the Porsches, the Ferraris?that surrounded it, waiting for the race to begin, the DeltaWing stood out like a beacon. Its custom-made front tires each measured only 4 inches wide. They sat less than 2 feet apart, making the craft look like a jet-propelled tricycle. For months, it had been hailed as the future of motorsports, the most efficient race car on the planet, but many questioned whether the thing could even turn.

A half-mad experiment orchestrated by the engineer Ben Bowlby, the car had barely been tested. Bowlby's one-time boss, Chip Ganassi, who owns IndyCar, Nascar, and Grand-Am teams, summed up the project in what would become the DeltaWing mantra. "Here are the key points," he said. "Half the cost of the current car, half the weight, half the drag, half the downforce, half the fuel?same speed."

For his part, Bowlby wanted to turn heads, too. Dismayed by the lack of innovation in racing, he longed to give his three children a reason to click on the TV and wonder at the technical prowess in the sport he loved. Without question, his dream machine looked fierce. If you peeked under the carbon-fiber body, though, you couldn't help but see how delicate the DeltaWing team's hopes were. The rear axles were not much bigger around than those on a riding mower. The front suspension had been assembled using springs the size of a Red Bull can. They resembled something you'd find on a mountain bike. To get the DeltaWing down to fighting weight?under 1200 pounds with driver and fuel?the crew had to sacrifice some heft. Bowlby himself had said it would be a "mighty miracle" if the car finished the 24-hour race. His backers hoped it would run long enough to prove its point.

Now nearly 600 million people were watching worldwide to see how it did on the track.

Ben Bowlby has been designing race cars for 25 years, first for the international manufacturer Lola Cars, then as Ganassi's technical director. Like most engineers, he'd thought a lot about how to do things better. And like his motorsports peers, he always found himself stifled by racing's rule books. "I realized that I was part of a dinosaur industry," he said.

In 2008, at Ganassi's urging, the bushy-browed Brit began sketching out a revolutionary vision, a lightweight rocket powered by a modest engine. He knew that the world's automakers were pushing for efficiency. With fluctuating gas prices, rising costs, and mounting cries for environmental awareness, they were clamoring for sensible solutions. By contrast, motorsports was inching down the road toward eco-conscious racing. Bowlby dared to give it a great big shove.

To test his idea, he built a small radio-controlled model. To his delight, it worked. With backing from Ganassi, he created a full-size model in Indianapolis in 2010. The IndyCar series was planning to unveil a new chassis for the 2012 season, and the two men threw themselves headlong into the competition. Ultimately, the concept was just too radical. The racing world had not taken such a great leap forward since the late 1970s when Lotus's winged ground-effect cars stormed the Formula One circuit. IndyCar opted to stick with the Italian manufacturer Dallara Automobili. Bowlby was crushed.

His hopes for a thumbs-up had vanished?or so he thought. Three months later, he pitched the idea to the French board that oversees the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Intrigued by the notion of a fuel-efficient race car, the group offered him a berth in its newly christened Garage 56, a showcase for experimental cars. The DeltaWing would not compete, but it would get to run with the 55-car field.

Bowlby had one year to streamline the design, build the car, and test it. To succeed, he'd have to shave nearly 1000 pounds from the typical Le Mans prototype. That meant rethinking everything, from the tires to the transmission to the brake and exhaust systems.

With little prospect for a series-wide licensing deal, Ganassi was ready to move on, so Bowlby talked his way into the All American Racers shop, founded by Dan Gurney. Besides being one of America's best car builders and a legendary driver, Gurney, now 81, is regarded as a novel thinker, the first man to wear a full-faced helmet in Formula One, the guy who started the tradition of spraying champagne on the winner's podium. "I don't know when a car tickled my innards the way this one does," Gurney said. "I can't remember an innovation that has the visual impact that the DeltaWing does, and the technology makes so much sense."

The DeltaWing's first on-track test, at Buttonwillow Raceway Park, a dusty little road course in the California desert northwest of Bakersfield, was scheduled for the first week of March. The car needed an engine. Bowlby and team pitched many manufacturers; only Nissan of Europe bit. The company agreed to supply the 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engines on one condition: The DeltaWing had to prove itself on the track. A handful of reporters were present when the car took its first tentative laps, then broke down. It took a few more, then broke down again. Despite some wiring glitches and minor brake and transmission issues, the car cobbled together enough laps to demonstrate that, yes, it was fast, and, yes, even with those tiny front tires, it could handle racing turns.

Day after day, the thrash continued. The crew of about a dozen worked tirelessly in the small concrete garage. Each problem was met and resolved in a climate that resembled that of a high-tech startup or the early days of the space program?people toiling, sometimes without pay, on a project that might make history. They'd work until dark, set up lights, and work some more until 1 am, when they'd all head to the Motel 6 and sleep until dawn.

Nissan dispatched its own drivers and engineers to put the car through its paces. To protect the company's interests, they arrived in plain clothes. The DeltaWing passed the test.

On March 13, Nissan announced that it would power the car. Due to the tight deadline, however, the company contracted with a British race shop to custom-build an engine based on Nissan's design. In the end, the only genuine Nissan part included was the throttle-body assembly.

India invites Chinese companies to invest

India on Monday invited China to invest in its new flagship manufacturing zones as part of a push to broaden commercial links and cut a ballooning trade deficit with its Asian neighbour.

India's trade deficit with China, a longstanding economic irritant between the emerging market giants, soared 42 percent to nearly $40 billion in the last fiscal year, while total bilateral trade climbed 27 percent to $75 billion.

"We've invited China to participate in and support the establishment of one or more of the National Investment and Manufacturing Zones," trade minister Anand Sharma said in New Delhi after talks with his Chinese counterpart Chen Deming.

"That is where the opportunities beckon," Sharma said in a speech to Indian and Chinese business leaders, adding the response from the Chinese to the investment proposal had been "positive and encouraging".

The zones are being set up under India's National Manufacturing Policy which aims to boost manufacturing as a percentage of gross domestic product to 25 percent from 16 percent in the next decade.

The policy is part of India's struggle to provide jobs to its growing army of young people.

Chen, in turn, said Beijing, which exports mainly capital goods such as heavy engineering equipment to India, recognised its trade relationship with India was lopsided.

"We want to buy more goods from India to grow our trade relationship in a more balanced manner," he said.

"China and India are both fortunate to have sizeable domestic markets which give us the the opportunity to offset the risks of the weak global economy," he added.

Both nations' economies have slowed due to the global downturn and in India's case to high interest rates, corruption scandals and government policy paralysis that has dampened business activity.

Deming said China's economy was expected "to grow 7.5 percent or hopefully eight percent this year," down from growth of 9.2 percent last year.

India's once-booming economy grew by just 5.3 percent between January and March, its slowest annual quarterly expansion in nearly a decade.

Diplomatic ties between China and India are prickly due to a festering border dispute and the presence of the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama in India.

But trade has surged with the two countries targeting a goal of $100 billion in bilateral trade by 2015, even though experts say the trade imbalance is unlikely to improve significantly anytime soon.

The two ministers insisted India and China should see each other as commercial partners and agreed to set up a joint working group to look at how to boost trade and investment

"Let us trust each other," the Indian trade minister said, calling on his Chinese counterpart to take back a "positive message of India's commitment to deepen and diversify its partnership with your great country."

"Both countries will grow at a faster pace through this partnership."

(AP) ? Rain and wind from Tropical Storm Isaac and a massive police presence kept the protest crowds smaller than expected on the first day of the Republican National Convention on Monday, organizers say.

One protester was arrested following a march through the city's downtown to criticize the GOP's economic and social policies. He refused to remove his bandanna and police took him into custody in a waiting SUV.

Besides that and an arrest Sunday of a man with a machete in a protest zone, authorities said the city has been quiet. A march that had been predicted to draw 5,000 people Monday morning only drew a few hundred.

"Obviously to go from an estimated 5,000 to a couple hundred, the weather had to play a part," said Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor.

Hundreds of police officers and heavily armed members of the Florida National Guard patrolled the streets of downtown. Protesters were required to conduct their rallies and parades in designated areas and along specified routes, none closer than about a half-mile from where Republicans would be gathering.

"They've militarized Tampa. The chilling effect has succeeded," said Cara Jennings, a voter outreach organizer from Palm Beach County.

Later in the day, about 12 protesters sat in front of a line of dozens of police in riot gear. Tampa assistant police chief JA Bennett squatted down and chatted with them for a minute. They agreed to stand up and walk away peacefully.

"We need to keep the streets open," Bennett said.

Earlier, dozens of protesters gathered in a makeshift camp on the edge of downtown Tampa behind a military supply business. Self-described anarchists at the so-called "Romneyville" about a mile from the convention center said the weather wasn't dampening spirits.

"Republicans are like 'Ahhh, I'm melting,' " said Curtis Hunt Jr., 27, a homeless protester from St. Petersburg. "The weather isn't affecting the energy level."

"Diamond" Dave Whitaker, an activist from the San Francisco area, said presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney didn't understand people like himself or others camped out a mile from where the convention was being held.

"He is a multimillionaire," Whitaker said. "There is no way he can understand life, living down here at the bottom."

The 60 organizing groups for the protests included labor unions, Students for a Democratic Society, Veterans for Peace, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Occupy Wall Street and Code Pink. Organizers said there was no question the storm predictions kept their numbers down.

Sporadic heavy rain lashed the city and winds were gusting at 35 mph as Isaac passed to the west of Tampa in the Gulf of Mexico. The Republicans themselves had canceled most of their Monday activities because of Isaac whose path was tough to pinpoint.

Florida labor organizer Jose Soto said 16 buses of protesters from New York, Miami and the Florida Panhandle canceled because of the storm. He said the bus companies didn't want their equipment and drivers headed into possible problems.

"It's a calamity but all the people here are delegates for those who can't be here," said Soto of the University of Florida's Graduate Assistants United local.

Jennings, who wore a pink, neck-to-knees vagina outfit decorated with sparkles, said she was protesting the GOP's position against abortion rights.

"The right-wing agenda is turning back time regarding women's bodies," she said.

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, a Democrat, said the protesters had been given additional space and access to toilets and water.

"We are being supportive of people who want to come and want to offer an alternative opinion," Buckhorn said.

But he said that police planned to respond quickly if groups broke off from protesters and were intent on damaging and destroying property.

Chevelle O'Bryant took video of the protests while standing behind a chain link fence in downtown Tampa. O'Bryant works at Verizon and stood in the company's parking lot, enjoying the spectacle.

"It's overwhelming but it's good at the same time," she said. "I think it's a great thing."

She said she "absolutely" agrees with the protesters and wished she was marching.

"If I could, I'd be out there," she said during her lunch break.

Ron Paul?s swan song rally advertises his supporters as GOP?s future

When the roll is called at the Republican National Convention this week, Ron Paul will not be nominated for president. But for a few hours on Sunday, his supporters got to celebrate as if the ?revolution? was headed to the White House.

Thousands packed the University of South Florida Sun Dome for the ?We Are the Future? rally, billed as an attempt to ?assemble champions of constitutional conservatism.? Paul was introduced by his son, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, capping an afternoon of political speeches, musical performances, and lessons in libertarianism with a passionate but meandering keynote address that clocked over an hour.

This is likely Paul?s last campaign. The Texas Republican is leaving the House after twelve terms and has signaled he won?t run for president again. But his parting message to supporters was they represent the future of the GOP. ?Don?t beg to be let into the big tent,? he said. ?We will become the tent.?

Paul?s campaign put out a statement describing the Sun Dome event in less Zen-like terms, promising ?a bold sampling of a movement that?s already inextricably linked to today?s, tomorrow?s GOP.?

How inextricably appeared to be the subject of some internal debate among Paul supporters, even on the dais. Presidential historian Doug Wead, who served as master of ceremonies, asked all the Democrats and independents in the room to stand up.

?Commentators will say that this is the extreme wing of the Republican Party,? Wead said. ?Their meeting starts tomorrow a few miles away.? He praised Paul for appealing to young people and Hispanics. Wead, a former special assistant to President George H.W. Bush, called Paul a ?clean boat in a sea of garbage.?

Ashley Ryan, the 21-year-old elected to the Republican National Committee from Maine, blasted recently adopted party rules changes that will make the Paulites? delegate accumulation strategy more difficult in the future. ?We are all Republicans,? she said. ?These rules changes will hurt all Republicans.?

?After hearing Ashley Ryan speak earlier, I think it?s time to audit the RNC,? quipped Michigan GOP Rep. Justin Amash. Yet Amash is arguably the most successful Ron Paul Republican outside the Paul family.

?There is no next Ron Paul,? Amash said. ?Ron Paul is one of a kind. No one can replace Ron Paul.?

South Carolina Republican state Sen. Tom Davis, who endorsed Paul for president this year, also spoke, as did Barry Goldwater, Jr., a former GOP congressman whose father was the pivotal 1964 presidential nomination.

Goldwater asked the audience if the country was better off than in 1964. They shouted, ?No!?

Nevertheless, conservative columnist Jack Hunter compared the Paul and ?64 Goldwater campaigns. ?Barry Goldwater said extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice,? he said. ?Ron Paul listened.?

?Simply hating the other side is not enough,? Hunter, the official blogger of the Paul campaign, continued. ?It?s partisan, childish and useless.?

Three economists affiliated with the libertarian Mises Institute spoke before the politicians and activists. Lew Rockwell, the controversial former Paul chief of staff who edits an eponymous libertarian website, began by saying that his old boss was the only congressman worthy of the title ?honorable.?

Rockwell denounced the CIA as ?death squads, stealing squads, overthrowing-other-government squads.? He also called for U.S. troops to be used to ?defend our country, not invade and occupy other countries.?

Walter Block, a libertarian professor at Loyola University in New Orleans, then delivered a 25-minute talk about abortion. He suggested a compromise whereby women are allowed to ?evict? unwanted fetuses but not kill them. Audience members appeared to grow impatient during his speech.

Rand Paul strode to the podium amidst chants of ?Paul ?16.? There was little evidence of lingering anger from his endorsement of Mitt Romney. ?Republicans have to acknowledge that not every dollar is sacred that?s spent on the military,? he said.

The younger Paul called for auditing both the Pentagon and the Federal Reserve. He also walked a tightrope on foreign policy, associating himself with his father?s views that overseas military actions can serve as motivation for terrorists but making clear that this doesn?t justify attacks like 9/11.

Ron Paul threw all such caution to the wind. Mocking those who said he would have allowed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden to live, he argued that if his foreign policy had been in effect, all of the 9/11 victims and troops killed in the last decade of American wars would have survived.

Like John Popper singing Blues Traveler tunes earlier during the rally, Paul performed all his greatest hits: he talked about the military-industrial complex, the Constitution, the right to drink raw milk and make ropes out of hemp, ending the Fed, bringing the troops home and slashing federal spending. Paul zinged the ?group of neocons? who advocated the Iraq war.

?Get the government out of our lives and off our backs and out of our wallets,? Paul said, his voice straining. By the time he finished, even many of his youthful backers were tired and in their seats.

They rose again as Paul left the stage. Whether this was a final curtain call or an opening act for the movement his Republican campaigns inspired remains to be seen.

Request Reprint | Print | About Author | Report Problem | Tweet This Most electricians and electrical companies in Melbourne operate under normal working hours, therefore limiting their appeal to consumers. Electricians that work around the clock offer many great advantages.

Benefit to businesses Every manager knows there is nothing worse than an electrical failure causing your team to down tools during the working day. Time, money and productivity are lost, and commotion is caused in day-to-day activities. 24-hour electricians allow businesses to schedule regular servicing of their systems out of office hours. This causes minimal disruption to productivity, improves output and reduces the risk of failures during the working day.

Benefit to homeowners Calling an electrician out in the evening rather than during the working day suits homeowners who work full-time themselves. And people feel much more comfortable being at home while a tradesperson is in their house. As well as improving security, a 24-hour service is more convenient, allowing people to schedule electrical maintenance around their own personal schedule. Jobs that are often put off due to work commitments can now be completed.

What are you looking for in an electrician? * Expertise and professionalism? * Reliability and honesty? * Value for money and service with a smile?
