Voices of finance: fund manager at asset management firm ...

We meet in Bonds Restaurant on Threadneedle Street in the heart of the City, a popular hangout for financial professionals. It is 10am and the place is deserted, with one eastern European waitress absentmindedly polishing a glass at the far corner of the bar. He is in his early 40s and has an easy laugh and a confident diction. He is wearing a collar but no tie and orders a green tea, which he almost forgets to drink.

"On the one hand I don't think the financial industry is so radically different from the rest of the business world. Other industries are organised as pyramids where everyone is trying to get to the top; no difference there. Then again in the financial industry we are working with other people's money. That is a real difference.

"What you might call Gordon Gekko wannabes, they usually don't last very long around here. Ego and testosterone actually may cloud your judgment. You really don't want machos who enjoy risk-taking for its own sake. Investing is all about risk, but it needs to be calculated risk, taken as part of a deliberate strategy. I don't have 'heroes', but an archetypical good fund manager is Warren Buffett. He uses plain language, can put things in a broader perspective and is a very good investor.

"What I do: pension funds entrust us money to invest in the stock market, hoping that my team can achieve better returns than the market. We are so-called value investors, with a 'horizon' of about three to five years. After a lot of homework we buy shares in companies we hope to sell half a decade later for a good profit. We are like marathon runners, where traders are more like sprinters ? they close their positions [sell all their stocks] at the end of each day.

"I'd say that asset managers like me come in two varieties. There are the hedge funds. They do what we do, investing in companies on the stock market, but they do hedging (eliminating specific risks) or shorting (speculating on a share falling in price) in addition to this.

"The second variety of asset managers is the one I am in, 'long only'. These take only long positions and hence invest, or speculate, only on shares going up. This may be seen as a bit more dull and dusty. Hedge fund managers typically don't work for larger institutions, but for smaller independent boutiques. They may dress more casually, and can be more eccentric in their presentation. I'd say typical fund managers have stable personalities, independent thinkers, who are also modest ? in this business you need to be well aware of everything you do not know. It's in the unknowns that risk resides.

"Our clients are institutional parties, professional organisations with lots of capital that invest their money with specific investment teams they have confidence in. Retail houses, fund managers that sell funds to the general public, tend to attract clients more on the basis of the house's name, its image in public opinion.

"For me there are two kinds of typical working days. When I travel to meet with a company's management team I get up really early to catch a flight to some place in Europe. Upon arrival we usually rent a car and often end up driving through some pretty desolate landscapes.

"Meetings are about two things: acquiring information, and sometimes delivering a message ? when we believe that the company should change some of its practices or policies. It's mostly the former, and the way you do that is pretty much the way you are interviewing me now. Put the other person at ease, lean backward slightly and begin by pleasantly asking a non-threatening question like: where do you see your company in three years? You take it from there. Ask open questions.

"Delivering a message is something we regularly do as well. This is the province of so-called activist investors. These come closest, I suppose, to your Gordon Gekko. Activist investors actually want the boardroom of a company to change course. For the board to do that, to come around to the view of an outsider, that requires charisma on the part of that outsider, as well as a lot intellectual persuasive power. There are not a lot of people blessed with both qualities.

"What company managers really hate during these interviews is when fund managers or analysts come over and only ask very detailed questions about the last quarter and/or, when fund managers or analysts fail to prepare. The latter happens a lot. Many fund managers are so spread out, they have hundreds of companies in their portfolios. They take no time to read up in advance, and end up spending their time asking questions like 'what is your company's product?' or 'who are your main competitors?' Managers appreciate not having meetings where they exchange basic information that investors can easily research for themselves.

"If it's a big company the meeting usually lasts an hour. Smaller companies may reserve more time, since they are also interested in learning things from us, as representatives of the financial markets. As fund managers we speak to many different people and companies; that's a perspective that can be very useful to a company's management somewhere in the European heartland. Good company managers are eager for feedback.

"So we travel a lot, but companies' boards travel themselves too. We call these 'road shows'. They have a message to deliver, and they come to London and do a tour past lots and lots of asset managers and analysts. I often prefer visits to the company by myself. Companies often do road shows when they have a nice story to tell rather than when there are issues that may be depressing their share price.

"The other kind of working day is when I don't travel. Traders and brokers have to be at their desks really early because they have to do be prepared to start calling clients and trading before the markets open at 8am. I don't, so I can have breakfast with my young children, and usually take them to the nursery ? then the tube, time I use to read the paper and check on my phone, to see what the markets are doing and if there's news flow; events that may affect the companies in our portfolio.

"The major part of a day I spend having meetings, basically. Meetings with representatives from companies, analysts, consultants, clients or potential clients, and internal meetings with the rest of the investment team. There may be conference calls, and I phone up lots of people. I spend also quite a lot of work reading company reports and broker research, and modelling company's valuations.

"Ultimately what you are after as a fund manager is what we call the underlying reality, the fundamentals of a particular company. What kind of returns can a company make? What kind of investment and growth opportunities are there? To what extent is management willing and able to take advantage of these opportunities? These key drivers determine the company's value. We then build a model that we can feed new developments into, to keep our assessment of the company's value and prospects up-to-date. Finally we have to follow the psychology of the markets, because not everyone invests like we do, with a five-year perspective. There's a lot of herd behaviour. Successful investors are contrarians, they go where others are not.

"A different category of meetings altogether is with potential clients. Winning new ones takes a long time, years really. As an investment team you typically need a track record of at least three years. Pitching to potential clients, you begin by introducing your investment house, trying to persuade them you're a professional and reliable lot. Second you lay out your investment philosophy; why would you be making money or in other words: why do you expect to be able to outperform the market? You will then typically explain how you have organised your research process, so you go over that, and then you introduce your team, their individual strengths and backgrounds. Finally you go through your track record, explaining why one year saw better returns than another.

"The best moments in this job? There is the game element. Basically, an investment is a hypothesis about the future value of a given company. You believe its share price will go up, and you test your hypothesis by taking a 'position' [buying the share]. Then when you are vindicated, that is really very satisfying. And yes, that means you make more money. In that respect, the money you make expresses the degree to which you have been successful at what you do.

"Another top moment in this job is when a client decides to trust you with a large sum of money to invest for them. It's a vote of confidence, and that feels great. Yes, it also means that my income goes up, because we get paid partly on the basis of the total amount of money under management. The more you manage, the more you get. But there's the sense of responsibility too, I mean, in the end we represent families, the people who paid into the pension fund whose money we are managing. One of the greatest pitfalls for fund managers is thinking we are more important than the clients whose money we are managing. That's why there are not a lot of Gordon Gekkos among us.

"Finally, great moments in this job are when your relationship with the company you have invested in has become so strong, and your insights into that company and the market it operates in have become so in-depth, that you end up almost in an advisory role. Obviously management knows its own company best, but you may bring a perspective from the capital markets. Say, we show the company that their current structure is 'suboptimal' as we call that, and we suggest that they sell off part of their operations and accelerate investments in their core business. If such discussions truly lead to value enhancing actions by the company, that is very rewarding.

"I'd say I work 50 to 60 hours a week. In my job it's not about the hours you put in, it's about results. I do work late a lot. Occasionally I take a taxi home, as the tube will have closed. We tend to use evenings to update our models of the companies we invest in; entering new numbers and data etcetera. That's the sort of stuff that is very difficult to get done during the day. There is always more you can know and find out. Often I can't help myself checking the latest on my Blackberry even during breakfast with the kids. This job is never finished."

Samsung Galaxy S II LTE arrives in Japan, NTT DoCoMo offers up its first course of 4G phones

Japan has got its first taste of an LTE smartphone, and this one's Galaxy-flavored. Oh yes, Samsung's Galaxy S II LTE has made an appearance on NTT DoCoMo, running on the Japanese carrier's next-generation Xi network and promising top download speeds of around 37.5Mbps. The latest member to the carrier's top-drawer Next series will set you back around $260 (¥20,000) on a two-year contract. DoCoMo is aiming to reach the hands of 30 million customers by 2015, with another as-yet unnamed several more 4G devices already penned for release before the end of the year. Perhaps the pair of data-loving handsets will help to fill that iPhone-shaped hole in the carrier's phone catalog.

Update: Contrary to the Asahi Shimbun report, it looks like both the Fujitsu Arrows X LTE F-05D and the LG Optimus LTE will cosy up on the new high-speed network before the end of the year.

Mazda?s Capacitor Based Automotive Regenerative Braking System

It is called 'i-ELOOP'.Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - Nov. 24, 2011

Mazda's 'i-ELOOP' regenerative braking system

Mazda released details on a groundbreaking regenerative braking system that uses a super capacitor in leiu of a battery for quick storage. The system, which Mazda calls 'i-ELOOP', will begin to appear in Mazda's vehicles in 2012. Mazda claims that in real-world driving conditions with frequent acceleration and braking, 'i-ELOOP' improves fuel economy by approximately 10 percent. We know better but there will always be an advantage with regenerative braking rather than throwing it away any time you have to step on the brake.

Mazda's regenerative braking system is unique because it uses a capacitor that temporarily stores large volumes of electricity. Compared to batteries, capacitors can be charged and discharged rapidly and are resistant to deterioration through prolonged use. 'i-ELOOP' efficiently converts the vehicle's kinetic energy into electricity as it decelerates, and uses the electricity to power the climate control, audio system and numerous other electrical components.

Regenerative braking systems are growing in popularity as a fuel saving technology. They use an electric motor or alternator to generate electricity as the vehicle decelerates, thereby recovering a portion of the vehicle's kinetic energy. Regenerative braking systems in hybrid vehicles generally use a large electric motor and dedicated battery.

Mazda developed its regenerative braking system to handle a large influx of current and slowly give it back. And they somehow did it without the use of a dedicated electric motor but instead of a reversing alternator which sounds to me like a dedicated motor generator by a different name?

'i-ELOOP' features a new 12-25V variable voltage alternator, a low-resistance electric double layer capacitor and a DC/DC converter. 'i-ELOOP' starts to recover kinetic energy the moment the driver lifts off the accelerator pedal and the vehicle begins to decelerate. The variable voltage alternator generates electricity at up to 25V for maximum efficiency before sending it to the Electric Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC) for storage. The capacitor, which has been specially developed for use in a vehicle, can be fully charged in seconds. The DC/DC converter steps down the electricity from 25V to 12V before it is distributed directly to the vehicle's electrical components. The system also charges the vehicle battery as necessary. 'i-ELOOP' operates whenever the vehicle decelerates, reducing the need for the engine to burn extra fuel to generate electricity. As a result, in "stop-and-go" driving conditions, fuel economy improves by approximately 10 percent.

There is no way to improve fuel economy by 10% through a 12-25V system but on the Japan Test cycles known to the world as magic pixie dust, maybe 10% is about right?

The name 'i-ELOOP' is an adaptation of "Intelligent Energy Loop" and represents Mazda's intention to efficiently cycle energy in an intelligent way.

'i-ELOOP' also works in conjunction with Mazda's unique 'i-stop' idling stop technology to extend the period that the engine can be shut off.

Mazda is working to maximize the efficiency of internal combustion engine vehicles with its groundbreaking SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY. By combining this with i-stop, i-ELOOP and other electric devices that enhance fuel economy by eliminating unnecessary fuel consumption, Mazda is striving to deliver vehicles with excellent environmental performance.

SuperCap systems used for hybridization in R&D projects from the past found the Super Cap to be prohibitively expensive with the resultant payback smaller than what was hoped. Who knows, maybe Mazda has discovered the holy grail but when I hear of 12-25V systems returning a 10% increase in fuel efficiency, I will be just as skeptical as I am with SKYACTIV which so far has produced 7 more HP and the same highway fuel economy from the much hyped 2.0L in the new Mazda3 as the standard every day 2011/2012 Elantra with its MPFI 1.8L.

We will have to wait and see?

Re: Mazda?s Capacitor Based Automotive Regenerative Braking System

Your skepticism is justified. I doubt even powering the alternator with magic would improve fuel economy by 10% in normal circumstances in a non-hybrid car. It would be possible if we assume unusually heavy electrical demands, and a lot of time idling or moving very slowly.

Re: Mazda?s Capacitor Based Automotive Regenerative Braking System

Regen is meaningful in that it recovers kinetic energy that would otherwise be turned
into waste heat. But it is a lossy system, due the energy conversions between wheel
and battery.

kinetic -> (wheels) -> mechanical -> (gen/alt) -> electrical -> (batt) -> chemical

I've read that in the Prius the energy recovery efficiency is ~40%. A smart Prius driver
minimizes the losses by using regen as little as possible by "driving without brakes',"
traffic and topography permitting. If you're really trying to drive efficiently, regen is a
measure of your mistakes in being caught going too fast in changing real world
conditions.

So, different drivers will see different amounts of regen and determing "real savings"
would require removing the human factor somehow.

Stopped in my Prius w/ScanGuage, I do notice a slow reduction in charge in the HV
battery as it feeds the 12V bus via the DC-to-DC converter. So, Madza's regen system
coupled with the i-Stop would provide an alternate energy source for the "housekeeping"
electrical loads when stopped. I wonder though if the small gains are worth the necessary
extra cost and complexity.

I expect to see the old "What's the payback period?" question come up soon.

All that said, Mazda is to be complemented in doing something to recover otherwise lost
energy. I'd guess that driving in the "Zoom-zoom" style would generate a lot of regen,
but very little energy recovered relative to the amount of fuel that propelled the zooming
in the first place.

.

The Prius system allows Toyota to gear it really tall-since the electric motor can kick in to prevent lugging.

Great point. The Prius normally uses the electric motor to get going from a dead stop (assuming the ICE is warmed up). I hadn't thought about the savings from higher gearing, but starting on electric also avoids gas-wasting high throttle/low rpm usage of the ICE.

I'm not a big fan of regen. As rokeby says, braking of any kind, regen or not, is often a sign of inefficient driving: you've wasted energy to get more momentum than you need.

Another problem with regen is that most often it's a high current/short time event. For example, braking to a stop sign or red light: 10-20 seconds of regen?? Batteries recapture charge better from longer, lower current events. The SOC in either of my cars rarely budges after a typical stop like this. Maybe a capacitor captures energy from these events better than a battery does.

What DOES show on the SOC is regen during long descents and gradual decels on long freeway offramps, but these opportunities are less frequent.

I sometimes think that the main advantage of regen is that it reduces wear on the friction brakes so less money spent on brake jobs!!

Mazda's iStop autostop technology seems really great. Apparently they haven't used it more because of the demands on the battery during autostop, and this cap storage is a missing piece of the puzzle.

Ok, guys. Step down from your hypermile horse for a moment: brakes are there for a reason. You will need to use them, and likely more in the future as traffic density increases. There's not a way for our road system support 380 million hypermilers unless we leave the driving to computers, otherwise you'll have to always maintain 10x extra spacing for the one person out there that doesn't...

As for the technology, one of the more inefficient pieces of regen braking is the charge loss to the battery. Charging to a capacitor is far more efficient, although not as efficient as directly spinning a mechanical flywheel. In any event, Mazda will be able to get more that the 40% recovery number of the Prius's.

Where Mazda's mild hybrid will still lose out is the lack of a good EV only mode, but this will be as effective as Honda's IMA. At the end of the day, that's all it's about, is using less energy to support the inefficiencies of having a human driver that doesn't want to be efficient.

Re: Mazda?s Capacitor Based Automotive Regenerative Braking System

I think lightfoot has the key in mentioning i-stop. i-stop works with piston positioning instead of using an auxiliary battery. So, in addition to the gains by use of a smart alternator, and, I presume, higher efficiency in the charge and discharge process, many of the gains with i-eloop may simply be making up for deficiencies in i-stop.

The cost of the capacitors is obviously a key issue. However, just as the Prius' HSD saves by displacing multiple conventional parts, i-stop plus i-eloop displaces the auxiliary start/stop battery, and should reduce the draw from the main 12V battery and extends its life. Then, an extremely durable capacitor would have value at end of vehicle life. However, if large capacitor is heavy if could negatively affecting fuel economy. To become a dominant system the capacitor has to be durable and cheap enough to beat the displaced battery-based systems. But for Mazda's purpose, it just has to be cheap and durable enough to be able to make a profit on it: it does have a coolness factor on its side. I hope it at least indicates some price drops in large capacitors.

Umm, this IS the hypermiling site, so why shouldn't we be on that horse??

Other thoughts:
- I think all hypermilers DO use brakes, we just try to drive so that we are not forced to use them, which also happens to be a big part of safe defensive driving.
- Population of the USA is about 310 million, not all are drivers. About 190 million licensed drivers in 2000.
- I'm baffled why hypermiling would put a strain on the road system. Surely lower speeds would allow increased traffic density??
- Between 30,000 and 40,000 people die in traffic accidents on US highways every year, even larger numbers of serious injuries, so what we're doing now isn't working very well. Maybe it's time to change things??

Quote:

At the end of the day, that's all it's about, is using less energy to support the inefficiencies of having a human driver that doesn't want to be efficient.

Using technology to support unsafe driving by people that don't want to change to safer driving behaviors hasn't worked, so why believe that technology will work any better to make them more efficient? The number of people that manage to get a Prius down to 40mpg is a good hint. Humans are remarkably good at circumventing technology.

It would make more sense to put effort into improved driver training and testing*, retesting for relicensing, traffic enforcement, etc. Changing driving behavior can improve both safety and fuel efficiency at the same time. And lower speeds could enable engineers to design cars so that they are just as crash-worthy at the lower speeds as current cars are at high speeds, only much lighter/smaller, which would improve fuel economy.

So I'm stayin' on that horse, thanks!

* - Given the current political climate, it's unlikely that government would do this, but maybe insurance companies would. In the motorcycle arena, insurance companies more or less force you to take motorcycle safety training before they will insure you, and those courses are supported by the manufacturers and are very good.

I'll leave it there, this is way way OT, apologies!!

CFT: Perfect Packers are somehow improving

Green Bay Packers v Detroit LionsGetty Images

In the past, when Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh has supplied his version of an on-field incident that resulted in a penalty or a fine, he seemed persuasive.

After Thursday?s Haynesworthy performance against the Packers, Suh?s effort to talk his way out of trouble comes off as pathetic.

?What I did was remove myself from the situation the best way that I felt in me being held down in the situation that I was in,? Suh said, via NFL.com.? ?My intentions were not to kick anybody, as I did not.? [I was] removing myself, as you see, I?m walking away from the situation.? And with that I apologize to my teammates, and my fans and my coaches for putting myself to be in position to be misinterpreted and taken out of the game.?

It gets better.? Or, for Suh, worse.

?I was on top of a guy being pulled down and trying to get up off the ground, which is why you see me pushing his helmet down,? Suh said.? ?As I?m getting up, I?m getting pushed so I?m getting myself unbalanced. . . .? With that a lot of people are going to interpret it as or create their own storylines, . . . but I know what I did, and the man upstairs knows what I did.?

What Suh did requires no interpretation.? He aggressively pushed the head of Evan Dietrich-Smith into the ground, and Suh stomped on Dietrich-Smith?s arm as Suh started to walk away.

?I understand in this world because of the type of player and type of person I am, all eyes are on me,? Suh said.? ?So why would I do something to jeopardize myself, jeopardize my team, first and foremost?? I don?t do bad things.? I have no intentions to hurt someone.? If I want to hurt him, I?m going to hit his quarterback as I did throughout that game.?

He needs to quit while he?s not ahead.

?If I see a guy stepping on somebody I feel like they?re going to lean into it and forcefully step on that person or stand over that person,? Suh said.? ?I?m going in the opposite direction to where he?s at.?

It?s an amazingly flimsy, and perhaps delusional, effort to explain what was obvious to anyone with eyes.? Apart from the ultimate penalty that will be imposed on Suh by the league office ? and plenty of people believe a suspension is coming ? Suh needs to be concerned about the impact of his behavior and his lame explanation of it on his marketability.? From Subway to Chrysler to any other company that has chosen to give Suh a lot of money to endorse its products, that money could be drying up, quickly.

TiVo Q4 results bring first sub growth in years, DirecTiVo is imminent

TiVoWhile many consumers are still waiting for something new from TiVo -- finally enabling the second processor core on Premieres this weekend is a nice step, but how about more HD menus? -- said company has found growth for the first time in four years by turning to a more traditional way to sell set-top boxes in the US. Yes, the growth is mostly thanks to six months of success with Virgin Media and other provider deals like the one with RCN. TiVo netted an additional 117,000 this quarter, bringing the total to just over 2 million and even more growth is expect in the coming months -- despite the continuous drop in retail subscribers -- thanks to the expected limited release of the DirecTiVo in December, with a more widespread release next year. This helped TiVo realize a 25 percent year-over-year growth in revenues, but still wasn't enough to hold off a net loss, which came in at a cool 24.5 million for the quarter. You have to stop going down before you can go up, but more TiVos in more homes is a good thing for just about everyone involved.

British police investigating climate email hackers (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? British police will examine a batch of email exchanges between climate scientists which appeared on the Internet on Tuesday as part of an inquiry into the hacking of the private documents, police said on Wednesday.

The University of East Anglia, whose Climate Action Research Unit is considered one of the world's leading institutions on climate science, said the emails appeared to be "a carefully-timed attempt to reignite controversy over the science behind climate change."

Negotiators from almost 200 countries meet from November 28 in South Africa for a U.N. climate summit, where only modest steps are expected toward a deal on cutting greenhouse gas emissions despite warnings from scientists that extreme weather will likely increase as the planet warms.

An anonymous group or individual called FOIA posted a file on a Russian server, http:/files.sinwt.ru/download.phpfile=25FOIA2011.zip,

which included more than 5,000 emails.

Two years ago, a series of emails written by climate experts from the university were stolen by unknown hackers and spread across the Internet in what became known as "Climategate," just before a U.N. climate summit in Copenhagen.

The leaked emails contained private correspondence from 1995 to 2009. Climate change skeptics claimed they showed scientists manipulating data to support global warming.

However, independent inquiries cleared the university of all accusations of fraud and data manipulation, although they did recommend it change the way it handled requests for information.

"We are aware of the release of the document cache. The contents will be of interest to our investigation which is ongoing," said police spokeswoman Nicola Atter.

"Nothing so far leads us to believe the emails raise any new issues. If, on closer study, we see anything that requires further investigation, that we will do," Edward Acton, vice chancellor of the university, told reporters on Wednesday.

"It may throw more light on the perpetrator rather than the victims of this invasion of privacy. I am very keen to know who did it," he added.

Police would not reveal information about suspects.

Acton said the way numbers appeared, using full stops instead of commas, was uncommon among British or American English speakers.

In addition to the 5,000 emails released on Tuesday, there are another 39,000 pages which cannot be accessed yet as they require a password, the vice-chancellor said.

Those seen so far include quotes on discussions between scientists over how to portray climate data, the workings of the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and how to share information.

"I have looked at 100 or so and those highlighted are quite cherry-picked (...) They are quite representative of frank and honest discussion between scientists," said Phil Jones, head of the university unit.

In a statement immediately after the emails appeared on the Internet on Tuesday, the university said: "This appears to be a carefully-timed attempt to reignite controversy over the science behind climate change when that science has been vindicated by three separate independent inquiries and a number of studies."

FIFA's Blatter calls racism row 'closed'

By EILEEN NG

updated 2:47 a.m. ET Nov. 23, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -FIFA president Sepp Blatter reckons he has apologized enough for his recent comments on racism that triggered a furor and considers the matter "closed."

Blatter expressed regret last week for the uproar caused by his claim that racial incidents between players on the field could be settled by a handshake at the end of a game.

"I can only say this item for me is closed," Blatter told a news conference at the Asian Football Confederation's headquarters in Malaysia on Wednesday. "There is no tolerance (of) racism.

"I have been interpreted as such and I have made my apologies. I cannot say anything more."

Blatter was responding to a question about his next move after Neil Warnock, manager of Premier League club Queens Park Rangers, suggested last week that black players around the world should boycott their next international matches in a show of protest against Blatter.

"There is no discrimination in my feelings, there is no racism, nothing at all," Blatter said. "This matter for me is over. We go forward. There is zero tolerance (for) racism, zero tolerance (for) discrimination in all activities in the field of play and outside the field."

Blatter insisted he was not surprised by the British media's strong criticism of him and calls for him to stand down as head of football's world governing body, but added that he was "very much hurt by these comments because it touched me in my conscience and my determination to go against racism."

The 75-year-old Swiss, who was re-elected to a four-year term in June, last week ruled out leaving his post amid the latest controversy.

Gingrich's New Contract with America Explained -- Don't Be Poor, Sick or Old (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Newt Gingrich , Herman Cain , Ron Paul and Mitt Romney are the current leaders in the Republican race to win the GOP nomination. Republican voters are divided about which horse to back in the race. I'm here to help with by translating politician-speak into English, starting with Newt Gingrich's 21st century Contract With America, a 10-part program. Here are his points.

Repeal Obamacare

Repeal the Obama health care law and replace it with a market driven (profit focused) system. Profit means better care for your kids.

Return to robust job creation

Reduce taxes on corporations, eliminate most taxes on the rich, and saddle the middle class with the burden. That always creates jobs. Get rid of the National Labor Relations Board -- that pesky agency that tries to make sure workers are treated fairly.

Unleash America's full energy production potential

Drill every square inch of land that might have oil or coal under it. Get rid of the EPA. Energy companies have the best interests of the citizens at heart.

Save Medicare and Social Security

Begin privatizing the system so seniors can enjoy the thrill of gambling their savings in the stock market. That always pans out well for small investors.

Balance the budget

Increase revenues while lowering taxes. It's like increasing your income by taking a pay cut. If corporations and rich people don't get taxed but government revenue has to increase, who's left to tax?

Control the border

Turn the southern border into a new-age Berlin Wall. Make it easy to deport people including "gang members" whether they are citizens or not.

Revitalize national security

Write blank checks to defense contractors and build the army up to a size that could conquer the planet in a week. It's peace through superior firepower regardless of cost.

Maximize medical breakthroughs

Deregulate the drug industry. Cripple the FDA and let Big Pharma sell any drug without oversight. Who cares if that new pill makes you grow a third arm?

Reform the judicial branch

Limit the ability of the court system to affect legislation. Republicans hate packing the Supreme Court with sympathetic justices. OK, not really.

Enforce the 10th Amendment

Repeal Roe v. Wade. The window dressing is to give power to the states. What issue do Republicans refer to when they talk about states' rights? Hint: It starts with an A.

I give the "Contract" a down-check.

This holiday season, the tablet goes mainstream (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? `Tis the season of the tablet. Despite the gloomy economy, shoppers are expected to shell out for tablet computers this December, making them about as popular as candy canes and twinkling lights.

The glossy-screened gadgets are the most-desired electronic devices this holiday season. And, of all the gifts people are craving, tablets are second only to clothing, according to the Consumer Electronics Association. The industry group expects U.S. consumers to spend an average of $246 on electronic gifts, including tablets.

With help from his three siblings, Bob Cardina, 26, plans to purchase an iPad for his parents for Christmas. Cardina and his sister live in Washington. His parents live in Tampa, Florida. So he's excited to be able to video chat with his parents ? them on the new iPad, him on his iPhone. He thinks his mother will be especially happy with the gift. One of her friends has an iPad and she's "definitely taken a liking to it," he said.

To be sure, tablets were on some wish lists last year, but they were mostly prized by gadget geeks. In the past year, they have become more mainstream. Consumers have become comfortable using touch screens, especially as smartphones continue to proliferate. Tablets are popping up in unexpected places, too. Apple Inc.'s iPad in particular is being used as a learning tool in schools, a digital cash register in shops and a menu at restaurants.

In 2010, people were "trying to figure out what the whole tablet thing was about," says Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi. "Now, people know what to do with a tablet."

For some people, the device has become indispensable for playing and working. While you can surf the Web, send emails and watch movies on a laptop or smartphone, consumers are gravitating to tablets because they can be more convenient.

The iPad is still expected to far outsell other tablets this year. According to Gartner Inc., nearly 64 million tablets will be sold worldwide by the end of the year. Some 73 percent of them will be iPads. By Gartner's estimate, Apple will sell 47 million iPads this year ? a figure it could certainly achieve, given that it sold 25 million of them by the end of September.

But while many think of the iPad as synonymous with the word "tablet," plenty of shoppers will be looking for a more affordable tablet to give this year.

Two of the most promising competitors come from online retailer Amazon.com Inc. and book seller Barnes & Noble Inc. The companies, major players in the e-reader market, recently released tablets of their own that undercut the iPad's $499 base price: Amazon's Kindle Fire, which costs $199, and Barnes & Noble's Nook Tablet, which costs $249. The Fire, which uses a heavily modified version of Google Inc.'s Android tablet software, is expected to be particularly popular with gift givers in part because of its low price.

"When you get below $200, sales go up dramatically," says technology analyst Rob Enderle.

Enderle thinks the Fire will be a popular gift, especially for kids. To him, it seems sturdier than the iPad with a display built from scratch- and crack-resistant Gorilla Glass, and it's cheap enough that parents won't be upset if a child manages to break it.

Tom Mainelli, an analyst at research group IDC, expects the Fire and Nook Tablet to take the second- and third-place spots, respectively, behind the iPad during the last three months of the year.

Rather than hurting Apple, he believes the success of newer tablets will help grow the entire tablet market.

"I don't think Apple loses just because Amazon wins," he says.

One of these Kindle Fire buyers is 24-year-old Ximena Beltran Quan Kiu, who purchased the device for her mother as a Christmas gift. Beltran Quan Kiu says her mom bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab for herself about a month ago, but didn't like it and returned it. She's hoping her mom warms up to the Fire, though, which she can use for reading, surfing the Web and watching movies.

To help make sure her mom likes it, Beltran Quan Kiu is also giving a year's membership to Amazon's express shipping program, Amazon Prime, which includes free streaming of more than 10,000 movies and TV shows and the ability to borrow certain books from Amazon's Kindle Owners' Lending Library.

"It might not be the iPad, but it can hold its own against the iPad," she says.
